Chairman’s blog Thursday 9th April 2026

Paul Dulieu introduced us to the 5% rule and challenged us to find something that we can improve by just 5%. Silvia Nedeva gave her first 10-minute presentation about her commercial and domestic cleaning business, and it was incredibly good.

After the unseasonable spring sunshine of yesterday today dawned bright and the seasonal warmth continued. 20 of us gathered amidst the warm glow that always accompanies our initial get together prior to the start of the meeting. Despite the ambient temperature there were only two for granola and the rest were either sausage or bacon with or without bread.

Performance League

Only one week into April and with all due modesty I have to report that I’m out front with 90 points followed by Stuart Smallcombe on 69 and Blake Hammond on 61. Stuart Smallcombe also was presented with his certificate confirming his victory for the month of March. Congratulations Stuart!

Education Slot

Paul Dulieu introduced us to the 5% rule. An epithet that runs parallel with the suggestion that Rome wasn’t built in the day. I always like new phrases, and I very much enjoyed the suggestion that we should approach the growth in our businesses by the ‘aggregation of marginal gains’. A feast for thought.

60-Second Presentation Round

Sally Waters was this week’s Oscar holder and talked of her fragrance of the month that we had all received a sample of before the beginning of the meeting.

Blake Hammond followed her and held up an IR receiver. It was only a small black box but it can apparently control everything. However, I’m not sure that sticking one in Donald

Trump’s pocket would resolve all the world’s issues but it appeared to be a glimpse into the future,

In a departure from the usual plumbing issues Paul Corrigan urged us to consider air conditioning. He mentioned something about 0% VAT which should be an encouragement to us all.

Matt Barry contented himself with a broad overview of his services, branding and creativity is at the heart of what he does. Talking of creativity, first instalment of Stuarts Smallcombe’s attempt to sort out Simpsons Tavern in the city. This week it is the Internet connection that he is looking to sort out. Watch this space for next week.

So volatile is the mortgage market at the moment for reasons we all understand that Clara Downton offered up her ability to report on mortgage capacity which can be needed  by people who are going through a divorce. She had recently been commended by a judge as to the quality of her reporting, So you should go to her if you’re involved in matrimonial court proceedings. Whilst you’re at it, if you are a builder and are involved in claims through the civil courts Terry Maylin’s your man, he is recently had a spate of them and chasing commercial debts is something that does very well.

Dave Roberts is quite rightly keen to have us find a way to make effective  referrals to him and this week his suggestion was inspections of fuse boards and also general testing, both of which can lead to more work for him.

Interesting fact of the day is that carpets can hold up to four times their own weight in grunge. Silvia Neveda gave us the grizzly details

Jane Malyon revealingly disclosed that Roger used to work for the Playboy club. She was however at pains to point out that she wore the bunny ears in the Malyon household.

The Oscar however went to John Hammond who described how dealing with things properly led from one job to another as he once again illustrated his hallmark to success was doing the job properly with the right equipment at the outset.

10-Minute Presentation by Silvia Nedeva

Silvia Neveda was on her maiden voyage, and her television presentation was a great introduction to how she got to where she is now and what she can do now that she is here. Hopefully her effective presentation will lead to lots of referrals! Lots of questions afterwards is always a good sign.

Another fantastic meeting! Paul, the ‘5% rule’ really resonated with me—it’s such a practical way to think about aggregating marginal gains without feeling overwhelmed. Huge congratulations to Silvia on her first 10-minute presentation; you handled it like a pro, and the ‘grunge’ facts about carpets certainly gave us all food for thought! Great to see John picking up the Oscar as well. Looking forward to putting those 5% improvements into practice this week
