A glorious sunny morning brought the Members out in their droves. 29 Members in all including Ford Asprey whose application for Membership has now been approved.
The Performance League
The leader so far is Kevin Radford who in order to give us all a chance, absented himself this week.
Education Presentation
Multi-tasking and standing in for David Plumley I introduced John Freeman. His theme was the need to build and develop trust ….Important matters in developing this trust are to understand the particular customer/clients’ needs and fulfil promises made. Don’t forget to underpromise and overdeliver rather than vice versa.
The 60 Second Round
Toby Acton, the current Oscar Winner was assessing the quality of the contributions. Here are some of the contributions that he was confronted with:
Saj Sreedharan was first up because he was due at Ascot later in the day. Much later on he is going to India for a week and therefore he was not pressing for referrals. When he left we were all wishing him well at Ascot. I hope he remembered to change out of his flip flops before going.
Tim Heard said that he was not looking for a referral but looking to talk to clients, he wanted to identify/have conversations with them rather than to cold call. I have to say that is my definition of a referral.
Kieran Peaty was talking planning applications. There is such a thing as a bad extension arising from a bad architect providing inadequate drawings and other terminal things. The thing to do is instruct him rather than anybody else.
Mike Rogers illustrated the time that he had been in the business by clarifying that two consecutive murder convictions would still have had him out free by now…yes that long. Although presumably a man of his temperament would not have been let out early on either occasion for good behaviour.
Ford Asprey was talking bespoke loft conversions and hideaway conversions; his first 60 seconds as a member! All of this and he still managed to hold his pencil behind his ear. The question is, does he suck the tip before the writes with it.
Simon Essex was not majoring on his own business this week. Instead he was mercilessly name dropping. He has been involved as the company manager for the principles in Godspell, getting the opportunity acting as a stunt double during their rehearsals. Chesney Hawkes was the name he specifically dropped which perhaps resonated more with our more senior members. His was the sort of music that Mike Rogers would have been listening to in prison (I think they get radios). His crowning glory will be driving on and drive off for “Dusty Bin”. Welcome Simon to super stardom. I appreciate that hob-knobbing with the rich and famous might seem more mundane to you but “us” Members” can only look on in awe.
Unawed Terry Maylin told the tale or two clients, both had debts. One had a debtor with no money and the other had a debtor who was much better established. The status of your debtor and the information you have about your debtor are of fundamental importance in deciding how far such claims are taken.
Ben, Ben Golding quoted us an interesting statistic. The average debt of people in this country is £30,000. How he knows this, heaven knows. However what he does know is that if you recommend people to Utility Warehouse through him, for one introduction per week you can earn yourself in excess of £1000.00.
The Mayor of Gants Hill, Vincent Goode was emphasising the value of folders. He had a little ditty to go with it.
Stuart Smallcombe’ s company provides wireless networks as well as any other kind of network.
Brian Painter bronzed and “Adonis like” is looking for people with obsessions. A current client has an obsession with dying in a car accident. He will try to remove this obsession before she comes to a sticky end.
Paul Booth told us not to look out for clients who feel they have unnecessarily been charged penalties by HMRC., particularly if they have been submitting their own accounts. A current client not only received the benefit of a refund of the penalty but also an overpayment. There are certain things you should not try and do yourself.
With all of these offerings before him who did Toby select for the Oscar. None of the above, he went for Nick Cooke because in explaining what he was doing at the moment he also mention his ability to involve other members of the group in the project, sounds like a good reason to me.
This weeks statistics and points of note

10-minute presentation by Matt Barry
Matt started his business at the bottom of his garden, he moved into offices 3 years ago and he now has an impressive array of clients who he advises on exhibitions and advertising. Apparently, he even has clients where it is necessary to advertise in telephone boxes. Has he come up with a better way of presenting ladies of the night. An impressive presentation and insight for all of us as to how we can recommend potential clients to him.
Great blog.
The most delightful business meeting and a fantastic way to start the day.
A good Ed slot from Jonny Free.
I’m sure Matt’s presentation was exceptional.
Have a great week and I’ll see you chaps soon.
Great to show more of what we do at Blue Serif. Great meeting – thanks everyone

Enjoyed this meeting, 29 present with 5 missing, I’d love to see a full house one week, if no chairs available, maybe I’ll sit on Brian’s lap. Talking of Brian, “self fulfilling property”? Maybe Dean should use this line… 🙂
Great meeting this week, Matt’s presentation was great showcasing his business but also the huge amount he does for the local community! Well deserved Oscar to Nick, and great to see Ford become part of the team. Look forward to seeing you all next week 🙂
