On a day which was the anniversary of Roger Bannister running the first sub 4 minute mile and The Hindenburg going up in flames and down in trajectory, 33 eventually turned up. There were 3 guests including Jane Malyon and Alex O’Neil for the first time, together with Nicky Baker for what we expect to be the last time before becoming a member. There was one additional guest, a bronze Hare statue which was the first round in our “spot the hare” competition!
The Performance League
Last meeting of the month for April had Scott Griffiths winning with 385 points, Matt Barry with 346 points and Mike Rogers a creditable third.
Education Presentation
Colin O’Connor’s maidan voyage reminded us to guard against procrastination. “Never do today what you can put off until tomorrow” must be avoided at all costs. Make a list; if it’s horrible…do it first (or at least second, after you have got rid of one or two easy bits).
New Member Induction & Existing Member Renewal
Mason Edwards and John Freeman have been renewed for another year and Nicky Baker’s application is being processed. Everything seems to be looking up
The 60 Second Round
John Hammond was adjudicating the Oscar Award this week
If there was a theme this week it was that the country, emerging from Lockdown was in some respects mirrored by our membership. Nick Cooke is now getting out and about doing structural reports. Stuart Smallcome has been “all over the place” and Nicky Baker has been out to clients for massage purposes. Simon Essex wants to come out and advise us in situ as to what plants we need whilst Mike Skinner has been to Glastonbury. Meanwhile, Mason Edwards wants to come out and clean your carpets (£20.00 per room with a minimum spend of £50.00. Terry Maylin claimed to have been to Liverpool but it was a visit to a court and it was virtual.
Off theme, Kevin Radford wants to read the small print on insurance policies for you and Toby Acton told us of a client who produces high-quality baby products in bright colours. More stimulating apparently. Vincent Goode was having none of this brightness. He showed off his specialised work for a prestige car vendor. He had produced envelopes for car documents that were black, expensive looking and well logoed. There were matching window stickers that can be read from both sides, at least when you are driving through Gants Hill Village.
It was Paul Dulieu who caught everybody’s eye including John Hammonds. Just as well because he performed his 60 seconds with a Chaplinesque straight face, in silence, by holding up a series of printed pages to get over his message. He might have been in a black and white silent movie and he won the Oscar.
10-minute presentation by Aidan Squire
Aidan talked to us about Employment law, using the UBER case as the main example and what it might mean for other business as we return from lockdown. Particularly those who use self-employed contracts. Definitely, some important points for us to all consider and an excellent demonstration of how TM Law can assist to keep us all safe and in line with the law.
Spot the Hare
It was the first week of this new idea, and 10 members correctly spotted that the hare was hidden by Sarah Steel. I have been reliably informed that it has now been passed on to another member and so we can continue to search for it next week…
Great meeting. I could not see the Hare. But I was being driven toa site on an emergency call-out. Colins ed slot struck a chord on time management as we have to react quickly to clients problems and minor items get put to the back burner. Aidan,s 10 minutes was very informative. I will have to have a one to one and find out more about engineers on standby and how this ruling affects pay.Nice to see so many new visitors I hope you all join
Wonderful turnout and great to have two visitors and a new member. Two excellent contributions from Mr Safety and Mr Solicitor. I’m looking forward to having some scowns {they’re not scons!) Go mad at the weekend!
Well done Colin sound advice and I would expect nothing less from you! Good clear 10 minutes from Aidan and I concur with what he says!
Good fun looking for the hare but difficult on a small screen so I may have to buy a larger screen!!
great to see our guests and hopefully new members.
Another enjoyable meeting and well done Paul for a creative 60 seconds. Bob Dylan meets Love Actually. Looking forward to the EBF Official Dog Walk on Sunday 13th June

Brilliant first ED slot from Colin too!!
I was very pleased to spot the Hare hiding behind Sarah S!!
Have a great weekend everyone and see you all next week! 😁
Nice to see so many faces . I could see an extra one as John Freeman was outside my window (doing building stuff) . Some very good tips from Colin and as usual an excellent 10 minutes from Aidan . Take note all those that employ Self employed persons – Are they really self employed ? it has Employers Liability implications too.
Really funny and uplifting meeting. Love the hidden ornament idea. Specially as I managed to spot it first.
First class meeting again. An outstanding Ed Slot by Colin and an excellent 10 minute presentation from Aidan. It’s great that we are all getting out and about again. I look forward to seeing you all next Thursday morning. The hare was a great idea. What is it next week I wonder?
