A record 28 members in virtual attendance included visitor Mike Skinner. With due warning that the 60 Second round was given its name for a reason and the threat of Tina wielding a bell we started the meeting.
The Performance League
Stuart Smallcombe is still out front but others are closing in. Watch this space next week.
Scott Griffiths reported that just 2 weeks into January we’ve almost topped our totals for last month, so a great start to the year for us all.
Education Presentation
Nick Cooke produced an interesting piece on the use of words and the need to use plain English. Subrogation and Exacerbation were examples quoted, he didn’t even get on to acronyms and initialisations. Lawyers were wrongly accused of being the worst offenders…..not so, we invent words with the intention of confusing. We have built an industry of then charging for explaining what they mean!!
New Member Induction & Existing Member Renewal
Terry Maylin reported the good news of Kieran Peatys successful application for the renewal of his membership. More next week apparently.
The 60 Second Round
Richard Reed was awarding the Oscar this week and after last week’s 4-minute rant, this week he was much more restrained.
Dean Caldon reported on the market slow down flowing from the Stamp Duty holiday ending at the end of this month and mortgagees pulling mortgage offers at the last minute in order to reassess.
Matt Barry showed a departure from his usual digital self by producing a good old fashioned but beautifully presented brochure. Vincent Goode’s theme this week was also brochures equally beautifully presented.
I have missed Brian Painters’ vivid descriptions of the various chemicals that smokers ingest and the likely consequences of their so doing. All fans of the gruesome heaved a sigh of relief and probably regarded this part of the round as the most entertaining and Oscar deserving. Ben Golding was also reverting to type by introducing 5 little piggies who each benefited in various ways from being members of Utility Warehouse. He rounded it all off with the 6th porker being the much-celebrated purple pig and much bigger than the others. I was transported to pre Covid times when we actually met each other on Thursday mornings.
Terry Maylin warned of untutored clients in the letting business and Paul Booth of unqualified accountants dealing inadequately with client’s book.
Toby Acton was extolling the virtues that structure brings to a business and also expressed appreciation of Nick Cook’s views on plain English. He rather let himself down by also advocating a “deep dive”.
A fresh-faced Scott Griffiths was promoting Learning Management Systems for websites.
Richard Reed however rightly awarded the Oscar to Kevin Radford for his clear warning to check insurance policies as to valuations etc because insurers, in these difficult times, have become more hard-nosed….if that is possible.
Meeting Secretaries Report
Scott reported £31,000 of business recorded so far this month. One referral has a current average value of around £1,000.
Synergy Team Meeting
Richard Reed reported on the successful Business to Consumer zoom meeting on Monday which was attended by 11 Members. Even the lesser spotted Mike Rogers put in an appearance.
10-minute presentation by Brian Painter
Brian Painter’s turn this week and having purged himself of the smokers curse he regaled us of illustrations of hypnotherapy in action. As always entertaining; as always informative. Questions flowed.
Referrals & Testimonials
A lively and busy round which reflected a busy January.
Congratulations to all Members on a great meeting which included the absence of any bell being heard for the whole 60 second round. Our visitor also expressed an interest in returning next week with a view to joining us permanently.
Great turnout of members and nice to see a guest well done Brian on a very interesting 10 minutes
Good to see everyone keeping to time!
Great meeting . Your ten minutes Brian was very interesting and to hear the wide range of people you have helped most enlightening. Thank you Nick for your ED slot . I am guilty of using technical terms when I am speaking to the end user I forget I and not speaking to the IT department . I liked the Little pigs back sorry Terry.
Great stories from Brian – as always!
Really interesting meeting again, especially Brian’s 10 minutes … totally fascinating.
Good to have so many people attend and hear everyone’s 60 seconds.
Excellent meeting this morning. Let’s all keep the money moving.
The 10 minutes from Brian I think was one of your best . The use of real examples really explained how you can help. Great meeting as always . Thank you for the referrals.
Well done to all those who contributed to a great positive meeting. To those who didn’t contribute, shame on you. Happy bananaday
A good turnout and a good meeting. We do seem to up our game when there is a visitor attending. A so true ed slot from Nick, it seems that all trades and businesses have their jargon and believe others understand it. I googled for info regarding entries to Spain.
I must have a negative PCR, TMA and LAMP. When I tried to find what these acronyms, meant, I was referred back to the website where they occurred. I’m still non the wiser! Thank you for your kind remarks this morning. Keep safe test negative.
Great meeting, great turnout and always an enjoyable presentation from Brian – today was no different. Well done with the Ed slot too Mr Cooke and welcome to Mike, hope we see you again. Have a great week all.
Our usual good form today and we were even clear on who we were and what our businesses do. Good “Ed Slot” Nick and a informative 10mts from Brian.

Sorry I am late to the party. I am loving getting up a bit earlier and joining in the early banter before the meeting. Really insightful Ed Slot for Nick – a subject that is close to my heart too and as always great to hear Brian’s presentation and stories
