A trial run at the Holiday Inn kept us on our toes. Apparently no one turned up at Mary Green Manor (Alan Shaw is denying it vehemently). We all initially congregated around the coffee machine outside the meeting room, claimed our breakfast from the restaurant area and sat down with similar table settings to what we are used to.
Most people knew their own registration number for parking purposes, but those of us who didn’t came in with it written down on a piece of paper. The prize for the first one who gets a £75.00 fine. Whether by dint of the curiosity or diligence, a slightly higher turnout this week – 22 in all.
Education Presentation
Stuart Smallcombe produced a mini-lecture in business philosophy. It was titled “the speed of trust” and emphasised the importance of trust in business. Low trust means slower business; high trust faster. Various things to do were advised by Stuart and the final one was to extend your trust to third parties and this is a way of getting trust back. It was well thought out and well received.
Performance League
Kevin Radford is well in the lead with one week to go. It remains to be seen whether, in his absence, this week’s activity will cause him to be overtaken. It seems unlikely.
In keeping with the theme of this blog, Stuart was in 8th.
The 60 Second Round
The Naughty Table automatically formed up on the table nearest to the door. The Naughty Table, however, is more than just a geographical location. It exists wherever there a group of likeminded naughty people. Once again well represented at this meeting.
It was the School of Whimsy however who were first out of the blocks with some excellent whimsey. Alan Shaw was first up. Back from holiday he explained all the things his business was doing but finally confirmed that it had nothing to do with him. Nick Cooke was equally enigmatic. He really prefers small jobs but then went on to explain that he was doing a big job but it would all be over soon. Finally, also fresh from holiday was Brian Painter who had a school girl for a client whose mind froze when taking exams. Something to deal with parents high expectations. I am sure I misheard the cure that was to get her to aim for mediocrity. Nice see the Whimsey’s in full swing.
Richard Read was hawking Puccini tours which he explained could include a trip to Verona with a small group and attending the opera. He seemed to think that this would be of minority interest but clearly thought EBFers were man enough to hear it.
Jo Jones extolled the virtues of hot stones which perhaps should be regarded as more attractive because of her current 10% discount for this deep healing relief.
Lee Scarff was back after a few week absence and declared that he was going to be a dad. He went on to say “…now I’ve got that out of the way…” I don’t know whether he was talking about the announcement or the activity that gave rise to his being able to make the announcement. Well done Lee…and of course his missus.
John Hammond produced an interesting outcome arising from the quality of his work. His quality lies not only in his installation but the quality of the pictures themselves. Apparently the cameras caught an employee lumping someone from the customer Company. It should put pay to his unfair dismissal claim.
John Freeman had a tale that made both himself and us all chuckle. He was called out to someone who had locked themselves in their shed. Rather than deal with the urgency by breaking down the door he decided to lift the handle and let him out.
Terry Maylin emphasised his usefulness as well by telling the tale of a client who has not taken his advice properly over the issue of a notice to quite to his tenants…”he will be back”.
It was nice to see Jo Eastwood back after a few weeks away, she is preparing for a Ball to assist St. Francis Hospice, I hope it all goes well Jo.
Scott Griffiths explained how whatever the size of the business was he always used a backup check list. Jill Willis also emphasised the mixed nature of businesses that she deals with and that the advice is the same. Investments in advertising; 5% to stand still, 10% to grow.
The winner of the Oscar was Stuart Smallcombe for colour coding his wiring and relating it to various members. “Alan Moller was red, John Hammond was blue. He was the very fast fibre optic, so what are you”.
All in all everyone coped very well with their new surrounds.
This weeks statistics and points of note

10 minute presentation by Rachel Riley Jill Willis
A flip chart allowed Jill Willis to present her version of “Countdown”. She managed to make everyone think, just when there was the risk of the odd one dropping off!!. A different and interesting presentation. Can I invite everybody to produce an anagram of the name Jill Willis or as close as you can get, she will judge the best.
Special thanks to Jemma from the team at Blue Serif for creating this awesome photo of Jill Riley.
if you swap one of the ‘I’ for an ‘s’ you get: Jill’s Wills
a new business venture? although Aidan might have something to say about it.
A fab meeting that put me in a good and positive mood for the day ahead!
Even cheating with the aid of t’internet I cant find any good anagrams of Jill Willis. I do on the other hand have possibly the best ever anagram of one of our other members names. If enough people request that I reveal it then I will…
“Silli Jill W” gave a great 10 minutes, good buzz and a lot of “Louding” about, but no points 🙂
ps… well done Matt and team for the creation !

An excellent meeting & well done to Jill (although should there be a stewards enquiry into the awarding of points in that first round of Countdown?)

Lil’Jil-Wils – the infamous New York rapper who is renowned for wearing chunky gold and diamond encrusted letters on bling chains.
