20 members present with a welcome return from absence by Sarah Steel and Melissa Jackson’s return from extended holiday in Australia. together with our two new female members we had a suffragette contingent of 7 out of 20.
The Performance League
Figures for the month of January were counted with totals for the month resulting in a clear winner in Terry Maylin with 246 points. Paul Booth and Scott Griffiths were following him. £43,000 worth of business recorded for the month also represented a reasonably good effort all told.
Education Presentation
Scott Griffiths was this week’s presenter and his theme was the use of language in promoting our businesses. There are no problems, only challenges; there are no costs or prices only investments. He also advised us to take care when we invite people to EBF. It is all about the words you use!
Membership Matters
All good news. We kicked off with the second new member induction in successive weeks with Fran Brabham-Neil being presented with her EBF equipment. Welcome Fran! Second bit of good news was that Neil Bellham is on sick leave (that’s not the good news) and might be off for a little while but he is still available for referrals so let’s keep him in mind in the coming weeks.
The 60 Second Round
Terry Maylin was in the adjudicator’s chair this week with a warning to beware of solicitors appointed by legal expenses insurers. He is currently suing two of them in respective two clients who have been dealt with negligently. Best thing is go to Terry in the first place.
Mike Skinner is looking for companies who want to create courses to be delivered via video. He currently has an engagement from tree surgeons for this purpose.
Fran Brabham-Neil dwelt only briefly on the selling and letting of houses and devoted the balance of her 60 seconds seeking donations of Easter eggs. You can bring your donations along to the meeting if you wish be involved.
James Humphreys is looking for scaffolders, roofers and builders, just like we all are in our search for new members. Toby Acton wasn’t that specific, he is looking for start-ups of all shapes and sizes and was at his metaphorical best, he effectively listed the four ages of man.
On a more intimate note, Melissa Jackson declared herself pleased to be back, sort of, from cuddling koala’s.
Brian Painter demonstrated that there is a first time for everything. He took on an alcoholic whose problem was instigated by authoritarian parents and he delivered his offering well within 60 seconds…. Thus demonstrating that you can teach old dog new tricks.
Vincent Goode produced colour swatches to illustrate the colour of the year, which apparently is ‘vivid magenta’. It’s a kind of full on colour which will appeal to some tastes.
Mike Hickson is often confronted with complaints by clients regarding the speed of their broadband. As with all IT matters, it is of course not as simple as that. You might have slow broadband but it might be a Wi-Fi problem or the numbers of people using the system at the time. No need to figure all of this out for yourself however, just consult Mike.
We had received one dose of metaphor from Toby Acton, the second dose came from Jane Malyon two told of 10 jars of jam being used as a metaphor for wealth and how they are distributed reflecting on how we dealt with wealth. It really wasn’t essential for you to understand the metaphor and certainly Terry Maylin didn’t try. He simply awarded the Oscar to Toby Acton. He clearly had out metaphored her in this instance.
This weeks statistics and points of note
Scott Griffiths briefly alluded to the £9000 worth of business recorded this week and then handed over to Sarah Steel as the current winner of the wordle league to try and rope more of us in. 8 taking part all told at the moment.
10-minute presentation by Toby Acton
It was Toby Acton’s turn this week and he gave us a preamble of his earlier career that focused largely on the size of his rubber duck collection. He then produced sufficient tape measures for us all to have one and use them as……. Yes, you’ve got it, a metaphor for your working life and how to view your remaining years before retirement. You have to see it really to understand it!!! My problem is that if I tried to use this type of presentation I would fall at the first hurdle. I wouldn’t be able to source the necessary tape measures needed for the illustration. For the purpose of referrals however he did produce useful information to assist us in assisting him. He will always talk to somebody without cost and an initial analysis for any potential punter would be no more than £250. What is apparent from his approach is his awareness that we should be making our businesses work for us rather than us working for our businesses. Take that thought with you and try and find him some referrals.
Referrals and Testimonials
Arguably the most important round because it is when we pass business to each other. As always a positive and effective round.
