There was an air of anticipation amongst the 23 members who assembled for this week’s meeting. It was an end of term feeling that prevailed as we dispensed with our usual Performance League, Education Slot and review of Membership Matters.
With the prospect of a real live meeting next week Paul Booth, who has been at the heart of the board’s exploration of leaving Zoom land, gave a detailed run down to guide and remind members of old and new things we should be having at the forefront of our mind in dealing with a different Thursday environment. Whilst we still await the final go-ahead from the Venue because of current staff shortages the mild euphoria persisted as we finally reached the 6o second round, the first part of this week’s meeting proper.
The 60 Second Round
It was the newly crowned ‘Rudyard of Rayleigh’, following his poetic triumph last week, who was awarding the Oscar. He was looking relieved and somewhat thinner, being on the last day of what has turned out to be a 14,000 step per day charitable venture.
Nick Cooke declared he had been doing something interesting this week. He had been investigating large depressions in a ladies drive to test the structural integrity of said drive before resurfacing. He has recommended a test of the drainage system that runs thereunder. There is a risk that he could be the cause of further depression if the tests don’t go well.
Sarah Steele informed us that the 8th to the 12th November was the Talk Money Week. As that is what she does she will be at the heart of it.
Mike Skinner has had an interesting week, carrying out with his drone a roof condition survey, and more on the promotional side dealing with a local wine bar. If that made him excited he didn’t show it but Colin O’Connor was positively on the edge of his seat remembering this week’s highlight, namely a face to face training session. This excitement did not appear to have been in any way dulled by the fact there were only two in attendance. Great oaks from little acorns……… Talking of excitement, Neil Bellham’s anticipation of the launch of his Chilli Republic has inspired him to verse in praise of those who have assisted him in the venture to date. This week was the turn of Scott Griffiths the praise of whom Neil duly dittified.
Apparently data cabling is what holds everything together so far as Stuart Smallcombe is concerned and it’s not just office and industrial buildings that need it. A church in Rayleigh is a subject of his company’s attention. Like the peace of God, it passeth all understanding!
Speaking of matters religious, I’m pleased to report the Tina Walker’s halo was well and truly intact this week. And the Mayor of Gants Hill Village is always looking for perfection. If there’s the slightest flaw in his product it goes back to be made perfect. He applies this to everything including the binding of books.
Scott Griffiths explained that Google profiles are investigating to ensure their validity, apparently 50% are not. And Scott’s suggestion is that whilst Google is tidying up he should be instructed to investigate any ‘fall shorts’ by your competitors.
Alan Moller always manages to get us scratching our heads. This week he referred to various editions of RCDs There is a new type ‘A’ RDC, presumably we should keep our eyes open for them.
So who did Paul Dulieu go for this week. The poet in him obviously considered Neil Bellham but it was the attention to detail and the striving for perfection that finally won him over and Vincent Goode was this week’s worthy winner. His delight was obvious, as he did a little jig in front of us all. Next week we can expect him to do it in the flesh.
10-minute presentation by Matt Barry
Matt Barry made the most of what might well be a last zoom meeting by producing a quiz requiring us to ‘guess’ the trademark. Well put together as always it got everyone going and the winner who put together most quickly the ‘well-known phrase or saying’ was Scott Griffiths.

Another lively round that seemed to produce quite a few referrals
May I suggest we all keep our fingers crossed and hope that there will be as planned our first live meeting next week. Paul Booth will be keeping you updated.
Another fabulous EBF zoom meeting and Matt’s 10 minutes, whilst making University Challenge feel like a pub quiz, was excellent! Very much looking forward to (hopefully!) seeing you all next week in person.
