Chairman’s Business Networking Blog Thursday 1st May 2014.
22 members attended, apologies for absence from remaining members and the sad news that due to an increase in business Chris Van Sadler no longer feels he can fill the photographer slot. Our best wishes to him for the future. We had 2 guests, Richard Pond from Connection magazine and, about to join as a member on behalf of Anthony Batty & Co – Gary Waskett. A frequent attendee of the Synergy Team Finance Group meeting, we hope to see him as a member next week.
Brian Painter, standing in for David Plumley introduced an Ed Slot that was delivered by Scott Griffiths. He gave us 15 things that we should stop doing to ourselves. Apparently this list of 15 had been a previous distillation by him from approximately 30. A further distillation was the message that you should have faith in yourself and your own positivity, which is the message we should all take on board as business owners.
The mental stimulation provided by the Ed Slot lead seamlessly into the 60 second round.
A full house was one cause for celebration; another was Neil Lewer’s 15th anniversary of his business. Marcelle Saad was unable to help with the appropriate stone for a 15th anniversary but she did inform us that emerald was not only the oldest but the relevant stone for this month.
Nike Cooke went to his bank that had a hole in the wall made by a car. At this stage I thought that he was confessing to a piece of bad driving, but apparently he was there to help the bank mend the hole.
Howard Bullock talked about the new company pension scheme becoming compulsory and will apply to most business by 2016. Certain workers can opt in or opt out, others can join but not opt in, and all in all he spread confusion in the hope that we would look to him for clarification in the future.
Dean Caldon has a new board to indicate sales and lettings and he held it up for us all to see.
Allan Moller was looking for landscape gardeners. We are also looking for a landscape gardener to join us. Let’s see if we can get out and oblige each other on this.
Kevin Radford managed to find a little rhyme at the end of his 60 seconds that finished up describing him as “helpful and attractive”……. and whilst we are on the theme of attractive, Richard Reed boasted a family holiday in Florida that he was able to put together £1,500. cheaper than Virgin.
The amazing shrinking man it seems now to be back with us and fully recovered from the effect of his accident… yes, Ed Crocker who not only boasted the effectiveness of his services as a courier but also his skills as an adviser in the logistics business. This was carried over very effectively into his 10 minute slot. But we before we deal with that, there is a small question of the Oscar. Scott Griffiths was awarding it and was attracted by Stuart Smallcombe’s pitch regarding bad wi fi connections.
So ended the 60 seconds round.
Before I do pass on to the 10 minute presentation; a 60 second round would not be complete without Brian Painter’s contribution and this week he talked of a 28 year old lady who had fear of flying but had never flown, which was actually more reasonable than appeared as first sight. How can a big lumbering thing (a large aircraft) stay in the sky, it is a death trap and so said her father. Passengers boarding ‘planes in Malaysia might still have a similar feeling that has not even lodged in their subconsciouses.
Nonetheless Brian always cheers you up when he doesn’t mention the things that kill you when you smoke, or the various revolting ways in which some of his clients conduct themselves before he administers his own particular brand of calming influence on them.
And soit was good to see Ed Crocker back again and this time he produced a very effective 10 minutes explaining, or rather probably more like “drumming it into us”, that his business was all about adding value. It was an assured performance that is consistent with those of us who have used Ed Crocker’s services. It is good to have him back in circulation.
When the numbers are up, not only is the meeting lively, the 60 second round amusing, but the referrals and testimonials round it normally reflective of the general enthusiasm that abounds. No difference this week, 27 referrals and £17,358.00 worth of recorded business. A great start to the month, let’s keep it up throughout the month and I look forward to seeing a full house next week.
Lively meeting yet again and a really good turnout, look forward to seeing you all Thursday. have a good week
